Doing business in Singapore – a comparison between the legal and tax system of Singapore and the Netherlands
This session – doing business in Singapore – will provide insight in the main characteristics of the legal and tax system of both Singapore and the Netherlands. On one side we have the common law system in Singapore and on the other side there is the civil law system as used in the Netherlands. During the webinar the following topics will be discussed by the speakers:
- How to incorporate Singaporean and Dutch companies, what is required for such and what are the differences;
- What are main differences from a contract perspective when doing business in a common or civil law system;
- What are the main differences between the Dutch and Singapore tax system;
- What should you bear in mind when doing business in Singapore from a tax perspective.
The floor will be opened for a Q&A after the session.

About the speakers
- Tabitha Timisela, Deputy Civil Law Notary, is a member of the Corporate/M&A practice group and is based at the Singapore office of Loyens & Loeff. Tabitha specialises in providing advice on all aspects of (Dutch) national and international mergers, acquisitions, restructurings and joint ventures, in particular in respect of private equity transactions.
- Eline van Dijke, a tax lawyer with 10+ years’ experience in Dutch and international tax matters, moved to Singapore in 2017 and further specialised herself in Singapore income tax and GST. Since February 2018 Eline is an International Tax Manager at the tax department of Luther. She advises mainly European based companies on their tax queries in the Asia Pacific region with a special focus on Singapore.
- Anja Schwarz is a Senior Associate in the Singapore office of Luther LLP since 2018. She advises mainly European companies on their investment projects in the Asia /Pacific region with a special focus on Singapore. Her areas of practice include in particular intellectual property law, immigration law, corporate law and employment law. Anja Schwarz speaks German, English, French, Spanish and some Chinese.
About the moderator
Gerben Visser is a Partner at InQvest Partners (a tech investment firm) and Founder of FinTech Consortium (a FinTech incubator). Previously he worked at RBS, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Citigroup in Amsterdam, New York and London. He received a Masters degree in Business (Finance & Economics) from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and dual Masters degree in Business (Finance & Economics) from Skema, a Grande Ecole Superieure de Commerce in France. Gerben is a member of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment and has been a registered Securities & Regulations, Corporate Finance Advisor with the Financial Services Authority in the UK. Gerben is Singapore based.
